Crown molding questions
Straight answers about the Spectis crowns this site covers. The product page on spectis.us is the final word on price, stock, and shipping.
What is Spectis crown molding made of?
High-density polyurethane. It cuts, nails, and paints much like paint-grade wood. Sticks ship primed white and are ready to paint. The same material is used indoors and outdoors.
Can this crown be used outdoors?
Yes. Use it on interior ceilings and on exterior cornice, soffits, and gables. Outdoors, paint promptly and seal the top edges. A concrete-finish or fossil-stone face is the match when the wall is masonry.
What do projection, height, and length mean?
Projection is how far the crown stands off the wall. Height is how far it drops down the wall. Length is the stick, usually 12 feet. Some sticks are about 139 to 140 inches. Use the length printed for that profile.
How do I buy a profile I see here?
Crownmolding.us is the guide. The cart and the live price are on spectis.us. See the current price on spectis.us. The dealer line is 800-986-1250.
What adhesive do I use?
Use PL Premium (PLP100) urethane adhesive on every bedding face and every butt joint, along with fasteners.
How long are the sticks?
Most crown sticks are 12 feet, which is 144 inches. Some are about 139 to 140 inches. Use the length on that product page. They are made to order, and delivery typically takes two to three weeks.
Will painted urethane look like wood?
After it is caulked and painted, the joints disappear the way they do on paint-grade wood. Concrete-finish and fossil-stone crowns are meant to read as masonry, not as a smooth board.
What size crown fits an 8-foot ceiling?
About 3 to 5 inches of crown height. A 9-foot ceiling is about 4 to 6 inches. A 10-foot ceiling is about 5 to 7 inches. At 12 feet, or in a foyer, use about 7 inches and up, or a built-up cornice.
What's the difference between cove, ogee, and stepped crown?
Cove is one smooth concave curve. Ogee is an S-curve, round over hollow. Stepped crown uses flat ledges and small curves so the ceiling throws parallel shadows. The six faces are on the crown styles page.
Do I miter or cope inside corners?
Either. Two compound miters are quicker on a square wall. Coping one piece over the other hides a wall that is a little out of square. Outside corners are miters. The corner page walks through both.
Can crown go on a curved wall?
Yes, in a flexible profile. Deco-Flex is for interior curves. Iron-Flex is for exterior curves. Straight sticks stay on straight runs.
Do I need to prime it?
No. It arrives primed white. Fill nail holes, caulk the joints, and paint. Acrylic latex is the usual finish.
Is box crown the same as boxed crown?
No. Box crown is a squared profile. Boxed crown is the deeper member used when the eave or ceiling is built out as a soffit box. They are separate categories.
