Painting Polyurethane Crown Molding

The stick shows up factory-primed white. You are not priming bare urethane. You are closing holes and joints, then painting.

Before the finish

Fill nail holes. Caulk the joints, and caulk the lines where the crown meets the wall and the ceiling. Leave the shadow lines inside dentils and carvings open. A heavy bead in a tooth makes the repeat look like putty.

The paint

Finish with a quality acrylic latex. Outdoors, paint promptly and seal the top edges so water sheds off the cornice instead of sitting on it.

Textured profiles

Concrete-finish and fossil-stone faces are supposed to stay textured. Use a finish that sits in the grain of the casting instead of filling it smooth. The install notes cover the same point at the wall.
