Field notes
Installing Spectis crown
Urethane crown installs with the same saws as paint-grade pine. The rules that matter are backing, PL Premium on every bed and joint, and not filling the ornament with caulk.
Tools
Miter saw, coping saw, tape, protractor, a sharp carbide blade, a nailer or finish nails, caulk, and PLP100. Blocking for anything deeper than a room crown.
Steps
- Plan the run and mark the spring line.
- Install blocking where the profile needs it.
- Cut the corners. Inside corners can be mitered or coped. See corners and coping.
- Glue every bedding face and every butt joint with PLP100.
- Fasten into framing.
- Fill, caulk, and paint. See painting polyurethane crown.
01
Read the cut sheet before the first cut
Projection, height, length, repeat, and dentil spacing are on the sheet. Pitch crowns, left and right, are separate SKUs. Do not mirror a straight stick up a gable and expect the teeth to land.
02
Block large profiles
Anything much over a simple room crown needs solid backing. Fasten into framing or into blocking set for the projection. Drywall alone will not hold a deep cornice.
03
Use PL Premium on every bed and butt
Use PL Premium (PLP100) on every bedding face and every butt joint, then fasten.
04
Cut like paint-grade wood
A sharp carbide blade, a miter saw, and a coping saw are enough. Support the stick so the thin edge does not chatter. Lay out dentil repeats from a corner so a tooth does not land on the miter.
05
Close the joints, then paint
The factory primer is there so you can caulk and paint. Fill butts, caulk the ceiling and wall lines, and leave the shadow lines inside dentils and carvings open. Acrylic latex is the usual finish. Outdoors, seal the top edge so water sheds off the cornice.
06
Texture profiles stay textured
Concrete-finish and fossil-stone crowns should not be buried in a heavy smooth film. Match the coating to the cast surface, or the reason you bought that profile disappears.
