Large cornice

Two-step crown

Two-step Spectis crown is the deep, multi-plane cornice used when a single small profile would disappear. Sticks in this filter often run 8 to 21 inches in height.

Related style: stepped crown.

Best for
Tall rooms, exterior eaves, formal entries, and build-ups that need presence.
Scale
Usually large: many profiles are 9 inches and taller.

A two-step crown reads as more than one molding stacked into a single moulded piece. The eye sees an upper crown and a lower step, which is how classical cornices were built from separate bed, fascia, and crown members. Spectis casts that stack as high-density polyurethane so the joint between the steps is already made.

On spectis.us this filter holds the biggest crowns in the line. MD1794, for example, is 11 5/16 inches in projection and 21 1/4 inches in height on a 12-foot stick, with a 7-inch repeat. That is exterior cornice and two-story foyer scale, not an 8-foot bedroom. MD1786 projects a full 20 inches. Plan framing, blocking, and a helper before you order a piece this size.

Some cut sheets in the two-step filter are labeled dentil crown. Trust the cut sheet for the ornament, and use the filter to mean “this is a large stepped profile.” If you only need the tooth course, start with crown with dentil instead.

Because the piece is urethane, the weight stays closer to pine than to plaster or PVC boards of the same volume. It still needs a solid substrate. Nail or screw into framing, bed the back with the adhesive the cut sheet specifies (PLP100), and paint after joints are filled.

Questions about two-step crown

Is two-step crown the same as a build-up I assemble on site?

No. The step is moulded into one stick. You can still add a separate crown cap, flat stock, or base member when the cornice needs to be wider than a single profile.

Will a 20-inch projection fit under a standard eave?

Only if the soffit depth is there. Measure the overhang and the fascia thickness before you pick MD1786 or anything else with a deep projection.
