Squared profile
Box crown
Box crown is the squared Spectis profile: flat faces and hard corners instead of a sweeping cove. It suits modern traditional and Craftsman cornices.
- Best for
- Rooms that should feel tailored rather than ornate, and fascias that want a flat face.
- Scale
- Mid to large. MD1178 is 8 in projection by 11 3/4 in height.
Box crown drops the S-curve. The section is mostly straight lines, so shadow lines are crisp and the crown reads as a band, not as carved plaster. That is the right move in a house that already has square casing and a simple mantel.
MD1178 shows the scale Spectis puts in this filter: 8 inches off the wall and 11 3/4 inches down the wall, in a 12-foot primed stick. On a 10-foot ceiling that height is proportionate. On an 8-foot ceiling it will dominate unless the room is very large.
Do not confuse it with boxed crown. Boxed crown is the filter for profiles built to wrap a boxed soffit. Box crown is about the shape of the molding itself.

Questions about box crown
Will box crown look modern if I paint it the wall color?
Painting crown the same color as the ceiling or wall makes the band quieter and more contemporary. A contrasting color makes the square steps read like trim.
